The Calamondin is a very popular citrus variety. I find that the ornamental value of this plant is undeniable. However I have spent time exploring the culinary value as well, Abbie and I discuss the differences between the original Calamondin and the 1950 introduction the Variegated Calamondin. This citrus variety is a important part of the Southeast Asian diet. I have become quite fond of the Juice that Abbie has turned me on to. In time this selection of Mandarin found its way to Japan where it remained popular until the introduction of the Satsuma Mandarin in the 1880's. AT the same time Seeded types had found there way to Florida and California, but not gaining much attention. The Cara Cara Orange with its Pink flesh has become a home garden favorite. Easy to grow, dependable fruit set and early season harvest. The Cara Cara came to the US by way of Venezuela and has had a quick rise in popularity. Introduced into the commercial markets in the early 1990's and to the home garden by the mid 90's. It seems that the Cara Cara's popularity grew in the Home garden faster than the commercial markets. Today however, getting a great commercially grown Washington Navel from the Grocery Store is almost a sure thing. The Cara Cara's flavor benefits from a longer hang time with its flavor continuing to get better. I gets sweeter and more flavorful the longer it hangs on the tree. Please forgive the Dogs and background noise. We were sampling from an established Oro Blanco Grapefruit Tree. Abby grew up with this tree and is very much fan of the Sweetness and full flavor of the Oro Blanco. I also have an appreciation for the fruit and have had it in my container collection for over 40 years. Still producing a wonderful crop of fruit year after year. Anne is a fan but this is a reacquaintance with the fruit, it appears she is still a fan For those who love the taste of a fresh Grapefruit in the morning the Oro Blanco is sweet and juicy and does not require a bit of additional sugar to enjoy.

The Trovita Orange has fine flavor and is almost seedless. The juice of the Trovita is tremendous both in quantity and quality. A select seedling of what is thought to be a Washington Navel Orange but lacking the classic navel. Great in the hot desert climates and provides sweet fruit in the coastal climates. Yuzu is a relatively new citrus variety to the United States, really only becoming popular in the last 25 or so years.
